かたまり【固まり･塊】

1 〔固まったもの〕 a lump; a mass; (土の) a lump of earth; a clod; (肉) a chunk of meat; (どろりとした) a sticky lump.

●氷の塊 a piece of ice; a lump of ice; 〔浮氷〕 a piece [lump, mass] of floating ice; an ice floe; 〔浮氷が堆積したもの〕 pack ice

・血の固まり clotted blood; a clot of blood

・鉄の塊 a lump of iron

・あいつはまさに筋肉の固まりだ. He's all muscle.

●大きな肉の塊が吊るされている. There are big chunks of meat hanging from hooks.

●砂糖がつぼの底で固まりになっている. The sugar has gone lumpy at the bottom of the sugar bowl.

・壁土を固まりにして投げ上げる throw a lump of wall-mud up 《to another workman》.

●胃に何か固まりのようなものができている. I've got [developed] some kind of lump in my stomach.

2 〔一か所に密集しているもの〕 ＝むれ.

●欲の固まり an incarnation of avarice

・欲の固まりと化す become greed [desire] incarnate; turn into nothing but greed

・欲の固まりみたいな連中 those who display unbounded greed.

●彼の言うことはうその固まりだ. There's not a word of truth in anything he says. | Don't believe what he says; it's a pack of lies.

・彼は猜疑心の固まりである. He trusts no one at all. | He is suspicion incarnate.

・彼女は善意の固まりのような人だ. She is goodwill itself [kindness incarnate]. | She wishes (you) nothing but good.
